PEFC to undergo global review

The PEFC Council has launched a global governance review to focus on making the organisation more effective.

The review is to be conducted by a panel of experts, mostly independent of PEFC, chaired by Lord Jamie Lindsay of the UK Accreditation Service.

PEFC adopted a new strategic plan in October 2007, with the goal to increase its market share of certified forest area to 60% globally in the next 10 years.

The governance review, which builds on the strategic plan, is expected to be complete by late spring.

Aims include: making the organisation more effective; ensuring PEFC's rules and standards are simple and easy to understand, implement and operate; improving external perceptions of PEFC's governance; and removing obstacles to dialogue with environmental non-government organisations.

Other panel members include Björn Andrén of Holmen Skog AB, John Dee of Planet Ark, Hans Drielsma of Forestry Tasmania and Dr Maharaj Muthoo of the Hari Environment & Development Society.
