PCP shows it has commercial clout

Precision Colour Printing is gearing up for its push into the commercial sector with a raft of new investments to complement its new 10-unit Rotoman web.

The firm showed off its firepower at a customer open day last week. Its 11-acre Telford site also houses a Goss Universal, Komori System 38 and a "unique" reel-to-reel Wifag that produces pre-print work.

The company has been described as web offset's "best-kept secret" and is in the process of widening its horizons beyond its traditional newspaper client base. Its 60,000cph twin-web Rotoman was commissioned last autumn, and represents a 6.5m investment for the firm, which is on track to achieve sales of just under 30m this year.

PCP's average run length is 35,000-40,000. "On the new press we are looking for runs of around 40,000 and large paginations high-frequency work or high-volume one-offs," said sales director Alex Evans.

PCP's pre-press department is totally digital and has moved to a PDF workflow using Agfa Apogee 2.5. It is poised to augment that with Agfa's Delano project management software within the next few weeks.

An additional 11,000m2 bindery unit has been added to the existing facility and is set to house a new high-speed perfect binder from Muller Martini. "That will make us totally self-sufficient," explained managing director Paul Liggins, who will retire from the business this summer, when he will be succeeded by Evans.
