Honours for Auton and Carter

Two individuals whose organisations have generated a great deal of print were among the 1,195 people recognised in the New Year's Honours List.

Sylvia Auton, the former chairman and chief executive of IPC Media, received an OBE for services to the publishing industry.

Auton retired in May 2013 after 36 years with the company.

David Carter, who was manager of corporate design and publishing at Ordnance Survey until his retirement last year, received an MBE for his services to cartography, and for his voluntary work with the National Autistic Society and Boys’ Brigade.

The official announcement stated that 74% of the recipients this year were people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity.

The list was notable because it was the first time more women received honours than men.
