Communisis clarifies Leeds web press plans

Communisis has revealed the details of its plans to "retire" three web presses at its Leeds print facility.

The print management company is mothballing a Polyman 16-page web press, a continuous stationery press and a 30-year-old mini web press.

The closures, which were announced at the end of last month, will mean around 23 employees lose their jobs.

Two 16-page Rotoman presses will continue to run, while work from the continuous stationery press will now be handled by an HP T300 inkjet web press.

Communisis' managing director for direct channels Gurdev Singh said: "We are retiring under-utilised redundant technology. But already this year we have spent £4m on new machinery.

"Other kit will also be upgraded later in the year. We have a large capital expenditure approval already so we certainly aim to invest further."

Speaking at the time of the announcement, chief executive Andy Blundell said the move was "totally logical".

"We are moving away from the commoditised end of the direct mail and print market," he added.
