Getting on for 240 leading lights from the worlds of book publishing and printing attended the event at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Holborn, London.
While the event was hosted by former barrister and BBC Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, who recently published her first book, Scoops, Charles Jarrold, CEO of organiser BPIF delivered the welcome.
“2022 seemed to go in the blink of an eye, and now we’re into 2023 and the signs are that it’s going to be yet another great year for the printed book – particularly with the help of a certain rogue royal,” he said, before quipping that he was grateful everyone managed to find a ‘spare’ day to attend the ceremony after the awards were rescheduled from last November due to a clash with rail strikes.
He detailed how the Publishing Association’s annual review of the publishing sector demonstrated that the industry continues to go from strength-to-strength.
“Indeed they commented that the popularity of books in all formats remains, and income has recovered to pre-pandemic levels,” he said.
He cited how the printed book remained an overwhelmingly popular format, with healthy growth that he predicted would continue into 2023.
He hailed the examples of creativity and expertise that filled the 17 shortlists “so many beautiful books are a shining example of why our sector continues to thrive” and concluded his welcome by stating that in times of uncertainty books are far more important than ever, quoting a short poem by Emily Dickinson:
