Around 250 leading lights from the UK’s book publishing and production industry celebrated the best in British book design and production at last night’s BBD&P Awards.

19 awards were handed out at the glittering ceremony at London’s spectacular De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms last night, whittled down from a shortlist of more than 150 books. The event was hosted by broadcaster and author Penny Smith.

“Thanks to lockdown and the past 18 months and especially after looking at all of the wonderful [shortlisted] books out there [in the foyer], I’m reminded again of Frank Zappa’s immortal words 'so many books, so little time' – well, we’ve had a bit more time,” said BPIF CEO Charles Jarrold, who used his opening address to highlight the rude health of the UK book industry by citing last year’s 4% growth in consumer book print sales to £1.7bn.

While the 2020 awards were cancelled due to the pandemic, Jarrold said they had bounced back stronger than ever this year with a record level of entries, more than 500.

“So, congratulations to all those shortlisted and thank you to judges who spend days working through all of them, tonight is an event for you, the creatives and the creators, the printers, the publishers, the designers and the students and your supplier partners to celebrate and champion the best in design and production of printed books.”

The big winner on the night, taking home four awards in total, including the Book of the Year crown for i.Detroit, was west London-based Boss Print.

I.Detroit brings together beautifully a combination of design, creative and print production with technology,” said the judges.

"What an incredible night that was to be meeting everyone in-person, and celebrate the production and design of beautiful books together," said Boss sales and marketing manager Bonnie Lo.

"It's been an absolute honour to be part of the BBD&P Awards this year and have the opportunity to showcase the best of what we at Boss do here in London."
