Rising star: Daniel Hutt Trainee field service engineer, InkTec

Daniel is 25 and has been working in the printing industry for five years. He joined the Witney-based supplier of large-format printers, inks and media last year.

What did you study, and did you have a particular career in mind?

I initially studied creative media production, as I wanted to work in the film and television industry

How did you find your way into the industry?

When I realised there were very few employment opportunities in the film industry, I wanted to find an alternative role that was both practical and creative

Did you know anything about print beforehand?

Not really. I don’t think I had really thought about print before and how it was created – only that the menus looked and felt nice at my local pub!

What does your role entail?

It covers all aspects of installing and maintaining our Jetrix large format flatbed and roll-to-roll printers. Plus, I am often working with customers to help them get the best out of their printers

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it?

The best part is leaving a site or finishing a call with a customer knowing that they are happy, and that I have helped them. The most interesting part is seeing what our machines can do

What would be your dream job (print related)?

I would say eventually running my own print company, where I can be focused on making my customers and staff as happy as each other

What would be your dream job (not print related)?

Property developer, lead singer, stay at home dad, football player… all of the above!

Do you have a ‘side hustle’?

Not currently, although ideas and designs are always in the works

What’s top of your playlist at the moment?

When I Die by Brett Eldredge

What has surprised you most about working in print?

Probably the lack of young people, it still surprises me that school leavers don’t realise this is a career they could have

What could the printing industry be doing more of to entice young people into print?

I would showcase the vast range of things that can be done with modern printers, alongside showing where the work eventually ends up. I’ve had the pleasure of walking through a city centre and pointing out all the various signage I’ve printed. It’s a great feeling and something I’m sure the new generations would love to experience too

If you ruled the world...?

Fuel rates wouldn’t be so high and holiday vouchers would be handed out like hot cakes
