Ian is 47 and has been in print since he was 16, starting off with a print apprenticeship. Of the industry he says: “I love it, so many great people.” He lives with his two children in Southsea and his hobbies include “anything active”.

What is your nickname?
Billy, no idea why. I think It was a family thing

Why did you get into printing?
All down to a man called Steve Alderton, and then my brother. Steve showed us around the print factory where he worked and that was it. We both got into the industry afterwards and are both still involved, as is Steve

What would be your dream job?
Something that involves helping people, I nearly have that which is why I love what I do

What would you most like to print?
I think I’ve done this, I loved printing fine art books and working with the client to achieve a match to their life’s work

Who do you admire most in the industry?
Anyone who has challenged me and my beliefs around print. Wendy King, John Eccles (Premier Fine Print) and Jeff Heyes ( MPI Group) to name a few

What is your favourite saying?
The classic: ‘always time for a reprint’

What is your favourite book/what book are you reading at the moment?
Favourite: The Celestine Prophecy. Currently reading The Law of Attraction and Gareth Thomas’s autobiography

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done?
Bulb picking when I was 16. Hot, dusty and long days, rubbish pay

What is your greatest ambition?
Getting Freelance Print Staff to where I set my initial goal

What’s your greatest fear?
Not inspiring my children to live the life they want rather than the one they think they should

The Athletico Mince podcast

What piece of kit would you like to see invented?
Transportation to be fully powered by solar energy alone

Most embarrassing moment?
Telling a fellow printer how good I was just before he pointed out that the white out text was filling in… he will never let me forget this

Where would you like to be now?
On my paddleboard, it’s a beautifully sunny day

Which superpower would you like to have?
The ability to heal

Who would be your favourite party guests?
Eric Cantona, Michael Johnson, George Michael, Conor McGregor, Kylie Minogue, Martin Luther King, to name a few. So many for so many different reasons

What was your childhood obsession?
Football, it was my childhood

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?
Setting up and running FPS for the last eight years. Oh and my first ever sale as a print rep, £10k order

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Everything is impossible until someone crazy enough comes along and makes it possible
