Q&A: Paul Sherfield Managing director, The Missing Horse Consultancy

Paul has been in print all his life, clocking up over 45 years in the industry. He’s married with two grown-up children and two granddaughters and his hobbies include lots of walking, reading, books, (printed of course), craft beer and good wine which, he notes, is increasingly English.

What is your nickname? 

Shergar, it usually costs a pint to find out why

Why did you get into printing? 

I was told to by my father, a letterpress printer, who got me a six-year apprenticeship as a compositor where he worked. A job for life, he said 

What would be your dream job? 

Formula 1 racing driver

Who would play you in a movie about your life? 

Michael Caine, when he was much younger, of course

What is your dream bit of kit?

An Aston Martin DB11

What would you most like to print? 

Beautiful books

What is your favourite film? 

The Magnificent Seven, only watching it six times a year now. It’s now being remade which will be interesting

Who or what do you hate the most?

Bad, shouty managers and the lack of a training culture in our industry

What is your favourite saying? 

‘Colour management is not difficult’

What is your favourite album? 

The Beatles’ White Album

What book are you reading at the moment?

I’m reading Paul McCartney’s bio by Philip Norman

What is your greatest luxury in life?

Space to think and just be

What is the strangest job you’ve had?

Testing computer listing paper perforations for two weeks, very boring. Yes, that stuff with the green lines

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

Nobody

What is your greatest ambition? 

To see my grandchildren grow up

What’s your greatest fear? 

Heights, I get vertigo standing on a chair

Who or what makes you laugh? 

Ab Fab and Billy Connolly 

Where would you like to be right now? 

Corsica, the best place in the Med. Great beaches and food

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

A long, black, shiny fake leather jacket with large lapels in the 1970s. Thought I was really cool

To fly

Making Airfix model planes and cricket

The pizza menus that appear through the letterbox
