Bezier loses 10m Boots contract

Bezier has lost another major retail contract, leading to speculation about owner HIG Capital's future plans for the business.

The contract for Boots’ point-of-sale materials, understood to be worth around £10m a year, has been won by Mansfield’s Linney Group.

Boots UK director of in-store marketing Mike Bradshaw said: "We can confirm that we have awarded our sales plan POS work to the Linney Group.  POS print work is also tendered on a project basis, and Bezier remains part of our roster of printers.  We are also continuing to work with Bezier in other areas of the business, such as Boots.com."

Rumours about an imminent restructuring at the loss-making Bezier Group are rife, but neither chief executive James Buckley nor finance director Adrian Lamb were available for comment. The firm employs around 400 staff.

A source close to the firm said: "People are spooked. They know there are announcements coming."

PrintWeek has learned the Dixons contract previously handled by Bezier has moved to Delta Group. It’s understood a number of other Bezier customers also currently have their work out to tender.

The Bezier business has dramatically reduced in size over the past two years. It lost its single-biggest customer, Asda, when that work was won by Delta Group in 2011.

In its last financial year, to the end of April 2012, sales fell by 27% to £49.1m and the company made an £8m loss. The group has effectively halved in size since 2009, when turnover was almost £100m.

HIG Capital acquired Bezier in August 2011, after the loss of the Asda contract, in a move that allowed Bezier to jettison an onerous level of debt from a previous buyout.

Accounts for Bezier’s holding company HIG Europe Magenta I state:  "The directors recognise that the group is dependent upon the support of the HIG Capital group in order for it to continue as a going concern."

The same accounts include a note saying HIG Capital’s board intended to provide financial support "for at least the next 12 months". HIG has consistently said that it intends to grow the business.

A fresh management team was installed this time last year when Buckley and Lamb were appointed. Former Inspired Thinking Group managing director Mark Lockley also joined as commercial director, although he left the business in November.

Separately, ex-Bezier client services director Nicola Colledge, and client director Paul Thipthorp, have both joined St Ives SP as brand development directors.
