Enterprise, ethics and attitudes

So, Lick UK is the latest casualty to add to the "beware new factories and fishtanks" list. And of course it's also the industry's latest high-profile pre-pack with the emergence of Lick Group.

I spoke to Linden Kitson for the piece about entrepreneurs I wrote a couple of months back, and his comments about the difference between entrepreneurial types and the masses stuck in my head, that being that entrepreneurs have an idea and act upon it - they walk the walk rather than just talk the talk.

Without being specific about this business, because I'm certainly not privy to any specifics, there does seem to be a wider issue to debate about our attitude in this country to entrepreneurial risk takers. In the States it is positively expected that any path to success will include stumbling over a failed venture or two along the way. The same cannot be said here.

The Enterprise Act appears to have exacerbated opprobrium because it is so clearly open to misuse. It would be illuminating to hear from anyone with experience of countries where a happier balance between enterprise and ethics has been achieved.
