Callprint makes major Xerox investment

Reprographics and large-format specialist Callprint has doubled its print capacity in three key sites as part of an ongoing investment plan for its core business.

The company has invested £350,000 in Xerox kit, purchasing three Xerox Versant 2100 printers, two for its Great Portland Street base in London and a third that has gone into the firm’s new Birmingham facility.

Additionally, a Xerox Color J75 has been installed at the company’s new Manchester site. The four machines were installed at the end of April and have replaced a number of ageing Xerox and Canon machines, which were exchanged as part of the deal.

The firm’s existing Xerox iGen4, which is based at its Saffron Hill hub in London, has also been equipped with a larger sheet tray and an upgrade of its RIP to Fiery.

The business has also undertaken a major upgrade of its entire printer RIPs from Creo to Fiery to provide more consistency throughout all of its UK operations.

Callprint marketing director Gary Cheek said: “The new machines will double the capacity of the locations that they are installed at as well as give them a greater range of stock options and colour consistency across the group. Additionally, these machines give us a robust contingency for breakdowns.

“Alternate machines were briefly considered but we feel the support and the long-standing relationship that we have from Xerox was something we wanted to continue with.”

The Versant 2100 is a 100ppm sheetfed SRA3-format digital toner press that can print on stocks from 52gsm up to 350gsm and offers finishes such as pearlescent, metallic and textured.

The Color J75 is a duplex colour printer that can print on a variety of coated and uncoated stocks from 64-300gsm, with a resolution of 2,400dpi, at speeds of up to 75ppm and volumes of between 20,000-75,000ppm.

Callprint managing director Steve Cheek said: “We are now able to print digitally on to a larger sheet size giving us the capability to produce A4 roll folds and A4 landscape booklets in small numbers.”

Callprint was established by Alan Cheek in 1992 and now has a turnover of £12.5m and more than 170 staff. The business is wholly owned by Callprint Group, whose shareholders are the directors of Callprint.
