New Year predictions - Tech-ni-Fold's Graham Harris

Graham Harris, managing director, Tech-ni-Fold

What was your highlight of 2012?

Developing our desktop creasing and micro-perforating machines, the CreaseStream Mini series, was incredibly satisfying for me personally. We had developed faster technology and innovative feeding systems on high end machinery over the last four years, and we took the quick decision - ¬as late as September this year - to incorporate it into a more basic and affordable format, so more companies could have access to it. We stuck to our principles of not compromising on quality by adapting a proven formula in an affordable package, and for instance we have a fully automated machine that retails for less than £4,000.

What are your hopes for 2013?

We have done really well in Mexico and Chile this year, so we are going all out to find good distributors in other South American countries. At the top of the list is Brazil and we will visit San Paulo early next year to try and secure at least one solid partnership. Our hope is that we can secure at least four new distributors in key territories where the print industry is pretty healthy.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2012?

We learnt that although people still want to source good technology and buy the best products, such as ours, some will definitely compromise on their expectations if a cheaper product will get them by, even if the quality isn’t quite there. Also, we noticed a slight shift towards companies putting on and planning open house and road show events, maybe in light of the ongoing uncertainty that surrounds some exhibitions.

What will you do differently in 2013?

We feel strongly that the way to a flying start in 2013 is to address all concerns and continue to align our products to meet all types of expectations and budgets. We hate putting the phone down on people that really like our technology, yet are left disappointed if we don’t have a smaller version that simply just does what they want – we have addressed this...

What does the industry need to do differently in 2013?

Paper quality isn’t the same, and for all of us involved in paper processing issues, we need to be better informed as to what is happening. More and more printers are seeing a different reaction to finishing their print. So for me, paper manufacturers, printers and solution providers need to talk more.
