Paper firms increase prices

M-real and Lecta have become the first paper producers to confirm European price rises from early 2005.

Finnish manufacturer M-real was the first to confirm that it will raise prices for coated and uncoated woodfree papers by 5-8%, with effect from 3 January.

This applies to both reels and sheets, but will depend on grade and market.

M-real senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Hannu Anttila said that price increases would go ahead earlier this month, when the paper producer published its Q3 results (PrintWeek, 11 November).

Lecta, the group which combines Torras Paper, Cartiere del Garda and Papeteries de Condat, has also confirmed it plans to increase prices for all its coated woodfree products.

This will take effect from January next year, and will be between 6-8% depending upon the country.

Rising costs for energy, chemicals and transportation were cited as factors.
