New year predictions: Andy Barber, iMail

Andy Barber, managing director of UK Mail subsidiary Imail, has enjoyed a year in which he oversaw global expansion of his Konica Minolta user group and watched his beloved Leicester City win the Premier League

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2016 will be remembered for?
Augmented Reality really came to the fore this year. Pokemon Go brought this technology to the masses, particularly with the kids, and it proved that this technology has its place when the application of it is right.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2017 and why?
Digitally-printed packaging is a huge opportunity next year. Both the print and software technology is almost there in terms of speed and costs and I think we will see a huge shift in a move from generic packaging to tailored, personalised boxes.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2017 and why?
Not having a coherent business plan is the biggest threat in this transforming market. In my role as Konica Minolta user group Prokom chairman I have privileged access to a large number of printers and a common theme is the lack of a proper strategic plan. This year more than any, I think we will start to see much more transition from physical to digital services and this creates a significant opportunity for print to become even more relevant, however it won't just happen. In this new world, good old-fashioned strategic planning is the order of the day!

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2017?
To “sell” itself better as a collective. I am seeing some great things happening in the postal world with initiatives such as the Mailmen campaign and joint industry groups raising the profile and value of mail. Manufacturers, printers and users should do more to jointly sell the value of print and increase its perceived value as a share of the marketing mix.

What was your biggest disappointment in 2016?
Brexit.

What was your highlight of 2016?
Drupa! And Leicester City winning the Premier League.

What are your hopes for 2017?
After a very (globally) volatile year I hope 2017 brings in a tad more stability as things bed down.

What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
To start saving for your pension early.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2016?
Anything is possible – both the good and not so good…

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2017?
Work harder, laugh more and enjoy more quality time with my family.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
Q: What's David Cameron's favourite Christmas song?
A: All I Want For Christmas is EU

What was the best Christmas present you ever received?
A Flying Scotsman trainset – which I still have!

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
I don’t do resolutions. If something needs adapting or changing then why wait until 1 January – do it now!
