British printers won two of the nine prizes available at Xerox’s Best of the Best Awards, where the manufacturer celebrates the best use of its products from around the world.

Both businesses – Birmingham-based commercial printer Clarkeprint and multi-format printer DCS London – used Xerox’s flagship Iridesse digital production press for their entries.

DCS London was awarded the prize for best client marketing collateral for the user experience guide it produced for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which is expected to open in 2023. When open, it will be the largest archaeological museum in the world at 81,000sqm.

Barry Page, DCS London’s managing director, told Printweek he was thrilled to have won – now for the second year in a row.

“Winning an award especially on a global scale is always a tremendous achievement and to have won this particular award for the second year running is even more special.”

The guide included four different publications, all printed on the Iridesse with metallic silvers, golds, and whites, and clear seals throughout the enclosing hardbound folder and internal books.

The ability to add these embellishments and use a larger print length, Page added, has helped DCS to offer customers print that will let them stand out from the crowd.

“At DCS we always look to use the latest technologies and feature embellishments of the equipment we use, and this final product demonstrates what can be achieved by doing so.”

Britain’s other winner at the awards, Clarkeprint, impressed judges in the self-promotion marketing collateral category with a sustainable mailer.

Clarkeprint's winning entry

The mailer – designed, produced, and mailed in-house – was sent out to Clarkeprint’s marketer clients to encourage them to carry out smaller, targeted runs and reduce waste.

By using smaller amounts of ink, not trimming the sheets, and sealing the sides with self-adhesive stickers instead of an envelope, Clarkeprint managed to cut down waste to a minimum and capitalise on the environmental messaging.

Printed on Fedrigoni Sirio Color Perla on the Iridesse, Clarkeprint added metallic silver, gold, white and clear inks throughout the mailer, with particular emphasis on the section informing marketers how to really make an impact through print; the logic to the project being that they should send a smaller number of high-impact print products to consumers.

Nigel Clarke, director at Clarkeprint, said he was pleased the judges understood the company’s design approach to the mailer, and that the team’s efforts had been recongised.

“To receive such prestigious recognition for what, at first glance, appears to be a relatively simple mailer just goes to show what a well thought out and well-executed project it is.”

Tracy Koziol, senior vice president of global offerings solutions at Xerox, added: “We were hugely impressed by the calibre of entries for Xerox’s Best of Best Awards 2022 and are delighted to celebrate this year’s winners.

“Together with our partners, we can continue to deliver outstanding levels of creativity and drive business success.”
