Rising star: Ruby Marshall, apprentice designer, Paragon Customer Communications

Ruby is 19 and started her apprenticeship at Paragon CC’s Nottingham site in Sutton-in-Ashfield in June 2021.

What did you study, and did you have a particular career in mind?

Before I started my apprenticeship, I was studying childcare as I really wanted to be a nursery nurse but the course wasn’t what I expected

What does your current role entail?

My current role involves actioning briefs, designing formats using CAD, outputting samples for clients, collating sample packs and more

How did you find your way into the industry?

I found the role being advertised on Indeed and thought the role looked interesting so I applied

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it?

I like that the role is creative and usually you are working on something different every day

Do you have an ideal career path mapped out?

I do, once I am qualified I would love to expand my skills and knowledge in order to open up opportunities for myself

What would be your dream job (print related)?

Something creative like what I am doing now. I think creating artwork also sounds interesting and would be ideal as I understand the cutter guides that they are supplied with

What would be your dream job (not print related)?

Either investigating crimes and working on cases, or working closely with animals

Do you have a ‘side hustle’?

Currently I don’t, I would like to have one as it is becoming more popular and more people are sharing their ‘side hustles’. I find marketing quite interesting and would like to incorporate that within a side hustle

What’s top of your playlist at the moment?

The Fratellis and Arctic Monkeys are definitely who I listen to the most

Which box set would you recommend?

‘You’ if you like a thriller series as it is interesting and keeps you hooked throughout

What’s your most-used app?

It is probably TikTok as I end up scrolling for hours

What has surprised you most about working in print?

How little we know about the industry. Almost everything is printed and most people don’t even realise it

What could the industry do more of to entice young people to join?

By educating more young people on the industry and the roles within printing may attract more young people

If you ruled the world...?

I would make it more affordable and make the world more peaceful than it is now
