Q&A: Tim Bill Managing Director, Tabs Creative Services

Tim, who was 65 this year, started as photographic assistant aged 15 for David Rudkin Photography, before moving into production in various increasingly senior agency roles. He set up Tabs 25 years ago last October. His hobbies include travel, music, golf and reading, and he has six children aged between 17 and 42.

Why did you get into printing? 

My grandfather and father were both in print so a pretty easy answer to begin with

 What would be your dream job? 

Sports journalist following rugby all over the world. Maybe a bit of cricket as well!

Who would play you in a movie about your life? 

Ray Winstone 

What is your dream bit of kit? 

In print just watching a large web press at full tilt with finishing lines pumping out a finished article. Out of print a Callum Mark 2 Jaguar

What would you most like to print? 

Reproducing old atlases or religious books with up to 10 different foils ageing the paper too… fantastic

What is your favourite film? 

The Deer Hunter 

Who or what do you hate the most?

Dishonesty and bad print when you are told it’s OK

Who do you admire most in the industry? 

The late Peter Lee of WE Berry, and Nick Dixon of Veriteva

What is your favourite phrase or saying? 

Live every day like your last as one day it will be!

What is your favourite album? 

Led Zeppelin lV

What is your favourite book?

The Ginger Man by JP Donleavy. 

What is your greatest luxury in life?

A good Sunday roast!

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

My wife

Being stranded on a desert island with my wife

What piece of kit would you like to see invented?

Eco friendly V12 motor car

Most embarrassing moment?

When I travelled from London to the Midlands on a press pass and went to the wrong printer (which in fact was in London)

Where would you like to be right now?  

My house in Thailand with the Mrs

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

Pretty much every morning

Who would be your favourite party guests?

Deep Purple

Where would you go if you could time-travel?  

Africa when the land was teeming with wildlife

What is the worst kind of print?

The print the client does not pay for  

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? 

My first contract signed for Tabs, it’s still running after 20 years
