Q&A: Melvin Vinyard Senior account manager, Fuller Davies

Melvin turned 65 in April and will retire next month after working in print for 49 years. He is married to Sandra and they have “two children and two lovely granddaughters”. His main hobbies are photography and listening to vinyl albums.

Mel (and probably others I’m unaware of!)

Why did you get into printing?
My interest in photography and art. At the time of joining this trade, I could embrace my interests with my working life

What would be your dream job?
Photo journalist

What would you most like to print?   
Vinyl album sleeves

What is your favourite film?  
Blazing Saddles

What is your favourite TV programme?  
Endeavour

Sweet or savoury?
Savoury, nothing better than a Chicken Tikka Madras with all the trimmings

Who or what do you hate the most?
Too many poor quality TV channels – it’s sometimes best not to switch on!

Who do you admire most in the industry?
Gutenberg for getting us all where we are today

What is your favourite phrase?
Unbelievable

What is your favourite album?
Difficult to name just one, but it has to be a Beatles album, Abbey Road

What is your favourite book?
Anything written by Wilbur Smith, now reading Tom Bradby’s Secret Service

What is your greatest luxury in life?
My growing vinyl collection

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?
John Lennon and Bobby Robson

What is your greatest ambition?
To live a long healthy life

What’s your greatest fear?  
Ipswich Town FC never returning to the Premier League

So many things – I always look at the fun side of life

Built-in software that deletes silly print prices being submitted
