Q&A: Del Simmons, operations director, Dayfold

Del is 40 years old, and has been working in the industry for 25 years. When not at work you can find him on his canal boat “moving at 4mph”. Or perhaps sat on the bank fishing if his fiancée Emily allows.

What is your nickname?

If I had a pound for every time someone called me Delboy! It’s actually Delroy, but that’s another story

Why did you get into printing?

I was 16 years old and luckily for me Gary Young (client services manager at St Ives Gillingham at that time) took pity on me and took me on. I still think he took me on because he liked the fact I had dreadlocks at that time. But only he could answer that

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Karl Pilkington

What is your favourite film?

The Star Wars films, all of them

Sweet or savoury?

Got to be savoury for me nothing like a good pie and chips

Have you taken up any new hobbies/completed any interesting projects during the various lockdowns?

I was recently bought a ukulele, which I would love to say I have mastered. However much more practice is required

Who or what do you hate most?

What always gets me ranting is biased news, as it stops people thinking and making their own decisions

What is your favourite album?

Marchin’ Already, by Ocean Colour Scene

What book are you reading at the moment?

I’m currently reading the Avon Roach Project written by Budgie Price and Trevor Harrop. We printed this book for these two extraordinary guys and the story is incredible. Even if you don’t like fishing this is worth a read

Cat or dog, or…?

Dogs. Cats are sneaky

What is your greatest luxury?

The canal boat

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

My fiancée Emily, of course

Who or what makes you laugh?

Karl Pilkington

What’s your worst fashion disaster?

If it wasn’t for my fiancée I would leave the house every day looking like a pile of washing

What was your childhood obsession?

Fishing, and something called ‘dode’ which to this day neither me nor my family have any clue what I was going on about

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Slow down and don’t be so impatient, try and enjoy every moment

Life is…?

Those moments that make you smile the most
