Q&A: Colin Sinclair McDermott Founder, The Online Print Coach

Colin has been involved with the industry for 21 years. He’s married to Inga and they have “one dog child”, Dougal the Jackadoodle. Colin enjoys walking, going to the gym and playing golf.

Why did you get into printing? 

My stepfather worked for a repro company in East Kilbride called CMR and was doing very well for himself, so it seemed like an obvious path to follow

Did you take up any new hobbies during the various lockdowns? 

I took up the challenge of giving up alcohol for 365 days during the first lockdown. It was tougher than it should have been, but it did free up a lot of time and energy to focus on getting healthy and it allowed me to start creating online courses

What do you hate the most? 

Animal cruelty

What would be your dream job? 

As corny as it sounds, I absolutely love what I am doing right now so it would have to be this. I get to help fellow business owners and importantly, stop them from making some of the mistakes I did when running a print company

What is your favourite TV show? 

Friends – it always puts a smile on my face, no matter how many times I’ve watched the episode

Who do you admire most in print? 

I always had the greatest admiration for Michael Todd who was MD at RCS in Retford. I was always so impressed by their production setup, their levels of service were so reliable and even back then, they were so forward thinking with e-commerce and giving their resellers all the tools and training they needed to grow their business

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got

What’s your greatest luxury in life? 

Dog walks on the beach

What is your greatest ambition? 

I have a goal to help 1,000 print business owners both improve their businesses and achieve their personal goals

What’s your greatest fear? 

Heights. In a recent attempt to cure this phobia, I got stuck on my hands and knees trekking in the Himalayas at 3,210 metres

Where would you like to be right now? 

Sitting by my pool in Northern Thailand, creating content, running my coaching sessions on Zoom after a busy morning walking the dogs at the local shelter

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

Probably my bumble bee colour shell suit in the 90’s although secretly deep down I loved it

Most embarrassing moment? 

Probably trying to look cool jumping a fence on a very busy Argyle Street in Glasgow only to have my lace catch the fence, resulting in me face-planting into the pavement. 

Which superpower would you like? 

To be able to read people’s minds

Billy Connolly, Freddie Flintoff, Diane Morgan, Ricky Gervais and Joanna Lumley

Where would you go if you could time-travel? 

I would love to go back to Christmas Day 2011 as it was the last day all my family were together at the table

What was your childhood obsession? 

Ornamental frogs

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? 

Soon after I went self-employed, I landed RBS as a client and I went on to manage all the printing for their insurance services department

What advice would you give to your teenage self? 

Always try and be more empathetic towards others, you never know what’s really going on in their life

How would you like to be remembered? 

As someone who helped and done good in the world

Hard enough! Work hard, play hard, always be kind and help as many people as you can along the way
