Q&A: Ryan Samways Reprographics operator, Amberley Adhesive Labels

We close the year with an inspirational Q&A subject, none other than our Trainee of the Year, Ryan Samways. He’s 22 and has been working in print since the summer of 2014. When not busy with the day job, he loves going to the gym and creating YouTube videos.

What is your nickname? 

Samways is my out-of-work nickname and in work I’m shortened to Ry – and Ry Ry if they are after help!

Why did you get into printing? 

I was interested in graphic design

What would be your dream job? 

Full-time entertainer or editor on YouTube

Who would play you in a movie about your life? 

Clark Kent (Henry Cavill)

What is your dream bit of kit?

Fully working superman outfit and cape with powers

What is your favourite film? 

The Wolf of Wall Street

What is your favourite TV programme? 

The Walking Dead

Who or what do you hate the most? 

I hate it when people don’t return borrowed things to their rightful place

Who do you admire most in the industry? 

I am going to have to say David Richards, our technical and commercial director here at Amberley Labels, whose help and guidance saw me through my apprenticeship and go on to win your PrintWeek Award for Trainee of the Year

What was your childhood obsession? 

Dinosaurs followed by cars

What is your favourite phrase or saying? 

Success demands sacrifice

What is your favourite album? 

American Idiot by Green Day

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

Bear Grylls, as he knows how to survive!

What’s your greatest fear? 

Deep dark water...

Who or what makes you laugh? 

Comedian Micky Flanagan 

Most embarrassing moment? 

My mum talking about my habits as a toddler and child to others without my consent!

Which superpower would you like to have? 

Superman’s

Where would you go if you could time-travel? 

Early 15th-century Rome

What was your worst fashion disaster?

Having to dress as Santa for a school Christmas play. Not only did I have to wear the costume but the band that held my beard in place broke while I was on stage, so I had to hold it in place using my mouth. I managed to play it cool so I got away with it!

Where would you like to be right now?

Somewhere exotic, or with a historic environment like Rome, Venice or Egypt

What advice would you give to your teenage self? 

To be much more confident in myself

How would you like to be remembered?

Maybe for being successful in what I do or for doing a particular thing. Hopefully I have time to achieve a few things first, so hopefully they’ll be things I’ll be remembered for...
