Tender angst

Another week has gone by, and still no news about the outcome of the IPC print tender.

Perhaps yesterday's announcement from the publisher about structural changes to its organisation goes some way to explaining the delay, as the Ignite division, which was part of the print review along with a host of Southbank titles, will cease to exist as a result.

I was also interested to see that the publisher has created a new board level role covering central operations, which includes production among other things. This will be headed by former TX md Charlie Meredith, and whether this will mean any subsequent changes for manufacturing director Jasper Scott and his production team isn't yet clear.

However, whatever transpires I hope the contract review is resolved one way or another soon. While it hasn't yet extended to the gestation period of an elephant, it's starting to feel that way.

In the meantime speculation continues to vacillate about whether the Walstead or St Ives camps will be the winners. Roto Smeets is also sneaking up on the rails as the rumoured new home for Marie Claire, which is currently printed in Germany anyway.

For staffers at St Ives in particular, which is the incumbent printer for the majority of the mags under review, the thought of potentially losing a chunk of work like this must be a cause of considerable anxiety. Feeling like that for months upon end isn't much fun.
