Jackson mini-boom taking shape

Tip of the hat to NatMags for being first out of the blocks with a Michael Jackson tribute magazine. Its 132pp one-off special goes on sale today. A deft design touch (if ironic) to go for a striking black-and-white cover that should have good shelf stand-out.

Impressive stuff from the team there in pulling that together so quickly, though it would have been nice if managing director Jessica Burley had included production partners in her vote of thanks for "a great team effort across circulation, marketing, advertising and of course editorial".

Wyndeham printed the 200,000 copies of the mag over the weekend, so that will have provided something of a boost to them at least. While Jackson's demise won't be enough to heal the printing industry, it is resulting in some interesting print curiosities, such as the news this morning that thwarted fans who were due to see him perform at the 02 will be offered the option of receiving a commemorative ticket instead of a refund, and these tickets are... wait for it... lenticular! Would really like to see one of those (or a pic at least), and with 800,000 tickets sold that will have been a nice little job for someone, somewhere. Whether disappointed punters will be willing to embrace the "collectors' item" line given the huge number of tickets involved is another matter.

I wonder whether the printer of said tickets has already been paid? Do hope so given the huge question mark over AEG's ability to meet its obligations for the concerts, with some estimates putting its uninsured exposure at £300m.

Elsewhere, OK! magazine in its typically tasteful style (cp Jade Goody) has opted to pay mega-bucks for a photograph of a near-death Jacko to adorn the cover of its next issue.
