Coveris has invested around £3.5m to effectively double the footprint of the Amberley Labels business it acquired a year ago by adding a second, re-equipped factory to the operation.

The pan-European packaging business has revamped one of its four other UK label factories and will bring it under the Amberley brand in September to drive growth in the decorative label segment.

The Tenon’s Way, Boston, Lincolnshire site, which will become Amberley Labels Boston, is in the process of installing two new MPS label presses, one configured with a Pantec inline foiling system, the UK’s first, and the other with a hybrid digital printing unit.

The first MPS label line was installed earlier this month, the second is being installed now. Both machines will be in full production prior to the September rebrand.

The £3.5m spend also included a range of specialised finishing kit, to add additional embellishment capabilities, and infrastructure investments. The soon to be rebranded Tenon’s Way facility has a 2,800sqm production unit and a 4,500sqm warehouse.

“We’re really excited to finally be in a position to share our plans around our new combined Amberley Labels brand,” said Dennis Patterson, business unit president for Coveris’ Graphics, Labels & Board division.

“The investment and additional processes required to meet the demands of new markets will deliver a major step change in our operations, which will see us shift change from a traditional large-scale, high-speed service model to a more targeted bespoke quality offering across two sites.

“Given the heritage, reputation and quality culture associated with the Amberley name, we are proud to extend this and are looking forward to launching our next-generation visual identity in September.”

Coveris acquired Blandford, Dorset based Amberley from its then managing director Trevor Smith last July, Smith subsequently became an advisor to the business last November following a handover.

At the time Amberley had just over 60 staff. With the addition of the Coveris’ Boston factory under the Amberley brand the two sites have around 200 employees.

As a result of switching the Boston business to support Amberley’s clients in the premium label market, which span beverage, personal care and fragrance brands, Coveris has redistributed some former Boston work to its FMCG label sites in Cramlington, a second Boston site on Lealand Way, and Spalding. The three FMCG sites will retain their Coveris branding.

According to Group marketing manager Sian Bates refocusing the Tenon’s Way, Boston factory will enable the group’s UK labels business “to support specialist capabilities and new capacity at the Boston site, which will enable all of our Labels sites to provide a more dedicated technical and service offer to the markets they support.”

The two Amberley sites, Tenon’s Way and Blandford are respectively headed by site manager Liam Doyle and managing director David Richards, who was sales director prior to its acquisition.

Vienna, Austria-headquartered Coveris operates 26 sites across EMEA employing 4,100 employees staff.
