The Monotype Foundation was formed to fund educational scholarships and research.
"The foundation is a labour of love, one that involves connecting in a meaningful way with those who care most about type graphic communicators, students, designers and type enthusiasts," said Monotype Imaging president and chief executive Robert Givens.
Its initial fundraising plan is to sell reproductions of original type from well known designers as limited edition prints.
Legendary typographer Eric Gill's original drawing of the Gill Sans Bold Extra Condensed typeface was selected as the first limited edition print.
500 limited edition prints priced at 100 have been produced and are accompanied with a commentary by British type designer Michael Harvey.
