Me & My... Screen Truepress Jet1600UV-F

Rod Fisher, managing director of Print-Leeds, explains to Jon Severs how this large-format inkjet has made short-run lenticular jobs cost-effective

Describe your business
We started life as a repro business in 1986, but went into printing in 2002 and filled a gap in the market by specialising in printing UV, predominantly onto plastics. We have a particular interest in lenticular printing, which is a niche that fits well with our expertise.

What does the machine do?
It is a large-format inkjet printer that can print up to 3,100x1,600mm at very high quality on a range of materials up to 50mm thick.

Why did you make the purchase?
We saw an increase in demand for short-run and one-off lenticular jobs, which are simply not cost-effective to produce on our Heidelberg CD74-6-LX-UV. The makeready with litho can be upwards of 300 sheets, whereas with the Truepress Jet1600UV-F, you are good to go straight away.

Why did you choose this particular equipment?
The key to success with lenticular is precise registration, so we wanted a machine where the bed didn’t move. The head positioning system has a high-resolution linear scale, which gives extremely accurate dot placement.

How fast is it?
It can do 13sqm per hour, and although it isn’t the quickest machine on the market, it makes up for it in quality.

What is the quality like?
Fantastic. We are renowned for the quality of our output and we have to be sure that any addition to our stable is able to achieve comparable levels. It is no good producing Premier League-quality UV litho print and only League Two-quality digital print.

How easy is it to use?
The machine is very easy to use and we have five staff trained to use it.

How much time or money has it saved?
The UV-LED lamps have instant start-up, which saves time and also draw very little electricity, which saves money.

Has it won you any new work?
In the first week of production, we printed for two new customers – both jobs were lenticular print.

Would you say that it offers value for money?
Yes, it is the right machine for Print-Leeds – quality is what our company sells.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?
The installation went smoothly and there have been no more teething problems than we would expect with any new piece of equipment.

What about the pre- and after-sale service?
The service from Screen has been excellent.

Who do you think the equipment is right for?
Extensive research has been carried out to find a machine that mimics the quality of our Heidelberg press with the ability to print on all the unusual substrates that Print-Leeds is renowned for. The Truepress Jet1600UV-F is a low-volume printer producing exceptional quality print – lenticulars are particularly stunning, with great depth and clarity. Anyone who wants that sort of performance should definitely consider it.
