Open window for Advent calendar?

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q We want to produce an Advent calendar cover for Christmas on a magazine-style product. The cover is a 6pp gatefold with the gate at the back on a run of 50,000. Can you recommend some printers I could approach for quotes?

A I recall that Wyndeham Impact (www.wyndeham.co.uk, 01256 479816) produced something along these lines for Country Life magazine a few years back. And as ‘Stan Dingtype’ has pointed out on the printweek.com forum, anyone with die-cutting and folding/gluing, who can access a binding line that can handle 6pp covers, and with the requisite amount of imagination should be able to produce this type of product. However, it would be good to know of any genuine specialists out there. To my amazement this seems to be the first time that Advent-style calendar products have cropped up in Help Line so please do get in touch if this is your bag.

Q Can you recommend a reasonably priced book binder in the London area? I’m looking to get the spine of a very old book mended. It’s a first edition of Black Beauty and dates from 1877 – I’m trying to fix it up for a gift and don’t want the cost to run away with me.

A Ooh, that sounds like a lovely book. I suggest you head to the Wyvern Bindery in Clerkenwell. Rebinding and repair are among the services on offer at this specialist bindery, which also produces a range of portfolios and presentation bindings. They’ll need to see the book to give you an estimate of the cost/time that will be involved. Contact: www.wyvernbindery.com, 020 7490 7899.

Binding round the bend #2

A couple of updates following Martin Cornford’s round cornering query (required on both the text pages and the book cover) from last week. Via the printweek.com Help Line forum, ‘Ivor Binder’ suggested Spink and Thackray in Leeds (www.spinkandthackray.co.uk, 0113 278 0353). They do most of their work by hand, they are real craftsmen. If this job needs hand finishing then these guys are of premium quality, says Ivor. Meanwhile, ‘Stan Dingtype’ popped up again with a further idea, Stan reckons that Allsopps of Ilkeston (www.allsopps.co.uk 0115 950 7631) should be able to handle this job too. I’m sorry to report that JW Braithwaite/JWB Finishers, which was also suggested as a possible source, is no more as the company closed last year.
