Fast-turnaround card production

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q We want to buy a Canon CX-320 business card printer. This model meets our particular needs as we regularly print business cards at the very last minute, often just hours before someone travels. However, I have subsequently discovered that this model no longer exists and hasn't been replaced. I know the toner is still available, but does anyone know of an equivalent machine or where I can still buy a (new) CX320? Thanks.

A The ever-helpful Bill Cheesman responded to this forum posting with a link to EBC Group (www.ebcgroup.co.uk) which still lists the CX320 as an available product. The machine uses Canon's Bubblejet technology and requires special pre-cut paper stock. Many thanks for the link, Bill. I had a dig around myself too, and while there are lots of all-in-one machines out there for things like plastic membership cards I couldn't find any business card equivalents. So I turned to an expert. Richard Caslon at Caslon has been in this game for years, and has spent much time searching for a system that would print, foil and cut cards all-in-one. His conclusion is that separate operations is the best and most flexible solution. Caslon has a range of nifty card cutters and also sells the Intec CP2020 digital printer which can print onto heavy stock up to 512gsm, making it ideal for card products. See www.caslon.co.uk for more information. GAE also sells an automated desktop card cutter, the Kirikko SK21m multi-cutter (www.gae.co.uk); while Total Print Finishing Services (www.totalpfs.co.uk) offers the CS 325 Modular model made by Czech firm Cyklos.

Christmas calendars #2
A flurry of feedback following a request for a supplier able to produce Advent calendar-style covers (Help Line, 28 August). John Carrington at Waddington & Ledger tells me that this style of product is ideal for inline finishing and the firm has produced numerous jobs of this type. Similarly, Mike Wheatcroft at The Lettershop Group has samples of previous formats the firm has produced and can supply ideas about the best way to achieve such a finish. Last but not least, Tony Robinson at cardboard engineering specialists CardMasters informs me that the company has produced various jobs of this ilk. Many thanks to all for getting in touch.
