Westdale aims to reduce waste with 4m 16pp Goss web press

Westdale Printing Group is planning to reduce waste and boost turnover after signing a 4m order with Goss to install a new 16pp web.

The Cardiff-based company, which runs both sheetfed and web kit, is due to install the five-unit M-600 press in August.

It will replace an 8pp Heidelberg web press, which has been in operation since 1997.

Westdale group managing director Alan Padbury said: “It is a far more efficient press and will increase our turnover. It will be used across a range of products.”

The unit, which has a speed of up to 55,000iph, will be configured with the Goss Autoplate fully automated plate changing system for faster makereadies.

Padbury said that Westdale has also selected the Goss Ecocool dryer, chosen for its low-energy and pollution control features.

He added: “We selected the M-600 press for premium quality, productivity and versatility to assist us in delivering this high level of service.

“The considerable waste-reduction features will make it ideally suited to printing shorter runs competitively. Energy consumption can be reduced by up to 30% when compared with a conventional dryer.”

A JF-55 combination folder and sheeter will provide maximum product flexibility. In addition, the press will also be supplied with a pinless former folder module providing the additional facility of 4pp or 8pp signatures.

Padbury said: “The flexibility of the M-600 press and its ability to efficiently produce a diverse range of product formats across varying print runs will help us maintain our position.”

Westdale posted turnover of £14.8m for the year to April 2006, and the firm has 125 staff. Estimators, production controllers, key account managers, and further staff for its repro, printing and bindery departments are currently being recruited.

The firm prints leaflets, reports and catalogues. The majority of clients come from government, mail order, publishing and tourism sectors.

It will be the company’s fourth press, in addition to a 10- and 12-colour Heidelberg SM 102, and a five-
colour CD 74.
