Web vote divides opinion on magazine sector's future

Printers are divided on the best way to improve pricing conditions in the magazine sector a printweek.com poll has found.

The poll, which ran last week, asked 'What's the best route to a profitable and competitive market in the UK magazine sector?'

Overall, 28% of visitors to the site believed that free market conditions should prevail with no intervention from external forces leaving the status quo to order the market, while the same percentage though that "rapid and organised consolidation" could take out capacity and costs.

Furthermore, prior to the collapse of Cooper Clegg, just weeks after its buyout by a management team, 19% of website voters believed that the exit of a major player from the sector could be the best route.

Finally, a quarter of those who voted said the best solution was the introduction of sufficient regulation to ensure UK print work stays with UK print companies and suppliers pricing fairly.

Recent pressures on the UK web-offset sector have resulted in Cooper Clegg falling into administration and Wyndeham Press Group (WPG) being sold to Walstead Investments.
