Torraspapel reduces total specific energy consumption by 12%

Torraspapel has reduced its total specific energy consumption - the amount of energy used to produce one tonne of paper - by 12% over the past five years.

In its 2009 Environmental Progress Report, the company said it had continuously implemented energy-saving measures in its production processes and reduced its CO2 emissions by 7%.

Updates made include inspecting and tightening of compressed air leaks, installing frequency converters, updating pulp-refining equipment and using hot air recovered from the process.

The company, which is part of the Lecta Group, also reduced the amount of sludge sent to disposal sites by 29% since 2003.

However, Torraspapel said its progress in reducing environmental emissions was "less significant" in 2009 than in previous years due to the economic crisis, which led to a "dramatic drop in demand that required a series of production stoppages".

The business also became accredited to a number of environmental standards, including the FSC and PEFC certification of all its pulp used for manufacturing papers in May.

In 2008, its coated paper and pulp mills became EMAS certified.

Torraspapel is a European producer of coated fine paper, speciality paper and self-adhesives for labels, which are sold across Europe, including in the UK. It is also a paper merchant in Southern Europe.
