Superunion set for US merger

Britains new superunion, formed from a tie-up between Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G), is preparing for merger talks with Americas United Steelworkers (USW).

Under the move, USW’s 1.2m members would join Amicus and T&G’s 2m members to create the first international trade union.

USW members include staff from International Paper, Georgia Pacific and Kimberley Clark.

Meanwhile, the international organisation for print unions, UNI Graphical, has launched an international trade union alliance with printing giant RR Donnelley.

The move is backed by Amicus and will step up cooperation between unions across national borders in their organising activities.

It will also seek a global agreement with the Chicago-based firm, which employs 60,000 workers worldwide.
Amicus national officer Steve Sibbald said he expected the firm to cooperate.
