Senior roles for Berforts staff as CMP expands

CMP Digital Print Solutions has taken on two former Berforts staff and intends to buy a new digital press in a bid to increase turnover by more than 100%.

The book company is looking to buy a Ricoh 9110 to replace a Ricoh 901, one of two the company in Poole, Dorset, bought 18 months ago.

CMP Digital Print Solutions replaced Xerox machines with three Canon Océ Varioprint machines 12 months ago and the total recent investment in kit is around £500,000.

Dale Burgess and Bob Cleverly meanwhile have joined the company to head up a new sales office in Luton, which opened this week.

Burgess and Cleverly had worked at book printer Berforts Information Press in Stevenage, which went into administration last month. They have been appointed as sales & marketing director and customer services manager respectively.

CMP managing director Paul Dawe said: “We've been in business 20 years and in the last four made headway on short-run, on-demand work.

“We are strong on service levels and bring more control to the client than some bigger firms where turnaround and lead times are not always good. Companies have failed in this marketplace.”

CMP Digital Print Solutions has 15 staff and turns over £1.6m, mostly from short-run work for training and manufacturing clients, who regularly place book orders for runs of 25 to 50.

Dawe expected to push turnover up to £3.5m within two years or so, and said the new Ricoh 9110 would push CMP into six-page A4 work.

“I have no grand idea of being a big £10m powerhouse especially when you look at some of the companies that have failed. And I don't think we are out of the storm yet.

“But we focus on service levels and are a very tight, effective machine, which is one of the reasons we are still here.”

Dawe said the two new recruits had an extensive wealth of knowledge within the industry, with three years’ experience working together previously.

Burgess said: “I have been watching CMP’s progress over the years and have been impressed with their focus on customer service.”

Cleverly added: “I felt the opportunity was too good to be missed and I was glad to continue the partnership with Dale.”

Dawe said: “Their knowledge and experience within the publishing markets will bring a huge amount of value to our book-printing division.

“CMP’s reputation of providing exceptional service will give the guys a platform, which will strengthen our position in the short-run and on-demand book printing sector.”
