Acquisitions, investments and insolvencies: all the action from a year in print

After weeks of speculation, corporate print specialist The Colourhouse closed its doors despite directors’ efforts to save the business… Paperlinx was set to partner with DHL on “a number of strategic initiatives” that could potentially lead to the logistics group eventually taking over from the merchant’s The Delivery Co logistics arm… Komori and Landa formalised a strategic partnership for press technologies, with Komori chief Yoshiharu Komori likening the significance of Nanography to the advent of digital printing… Langley Holdings completed the legal formalities required to incorporate Manroland as a wholly-owned subsidiary, leading to a significant boost in group revenues but not in profitability… In a surprise move, Heidelberg and Fujifilm teamed up in a fresh digital printing alliance focused on inkjet printing… Trinity Mirror's Reading print plant was set to close at the end of the year after the newspaper publisher revealed that it would not be renewing the lease on the facility… EFI won the latest round of its long-running intellectual property dispute with Durst covering printing with white ink after the Federal Patent Court of Germany invalidated "substantial parts" of Durst's patent… York Mailing expanded its board with the appointment of Richard Connell as chairman and Judith Donovan as non-executive director to assist with its ongoing growth plans… The BPIF’s quarterly Printing Outlook survey reported that volume and output had increased in Q3 of 2013 and that confidence was also on the up for the fourth quarter…

A further “final” extension was agreed a week later… Stephens & George ordered two Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour perfectors at a cost of £6.5m due for delivery in February 2014 and February 2015… Theatre programme specialist John Good was looking to break into new markets after investing £2.9m in three new printing presses and two finishing machines for brochures and programmes… Horner Brothers Print Group completed its transfer to the ownership of Paragon Group UK, following its fall into administration in August… Goss International has confirmed it is to cut its Lancashire-based UK workforce by 50% as part of its ongoing global restructure... Heidelberg announced that it was to phase out production of its Printmaster GTO 52 from March 2014 after four decades of production as it "realigns its small format-product portfolio"… Bradford-based Prospect Mailing Services was placed in administration, but a buyer was quickly identified... Cogent B2B, the new owner of St Ives Bradford, re-branded the company as Global Media Production. The renamed business then purchased Prospect Mailing Services for £400,000… Birmingham bookbinder and print finishing firm Henry Mills closed its doors on 22 November, after 157 years of trading, citing market conditions and a general move online… In its first results following privatisation, Royal Mail Group’s profits more than doubled… Envelope and greetings cards manufacturer Regent Group was in consultation with staff over plans that it said would lead to “a significant number of redundancies”…
