Purdy close to securing UK deal for Scheffer cover converter

Purdy Graphic Systems is set to launch the Scheffer Cover Production System (CPS) in the UK, and is already on the verge of securing the first sale.

"The Scheffer CPS is not a sheeter, a trimmer or a folder, but a combination of all three," said Adrian Purdy, managing director of Scheffer's UK agent.

The 450m per minute line is designed to run in or offline to cover presses, typically 16pp web offset, or even standard-width gravure.

The line slits the printed web into two ribbons and removes the trim. It then diverts them either further apart or on top of each other. The ribbons then go through either a single or double plough-fold unit and are then cut in a rotary cutter, which includes a knife and anvil cylinder with waste removal, to final size.

"This is so that you can produce finished covers, directly from a press, which are either flat and scored for perfect binding, or folded for stitchers, with or without gatefolds," said Purdy.

"Or you could produce 8pp glued booklets."

Product size is variable from one- to five-around a 630mm repeat and makereadies are typically around 20 minutes.

"The point is that you're producing a finished product with the same staffing as you need to run the press. You don't need the additional processes of folding and guillotining," said Purdy.

US-based Scheffer has already installed several of the 426,000 ($750,000) systems at RR Donnelley, Quebecor and QuadGraphics, but the yet to be signed deal with an unnamed UK printer will be the first in this country.
