Highly-regarded Algar has worked at Polestar and Watmoughs/BPC before it for the past 26 years. "It was time for a change and I'm looking forward to the fresh challenge," he said.
Heron managing director Richard Heron said Algar's manufacturing experience and skills would strengthen his team "and will be invaluable in our drive for continued improvement and operational efficiencies".
The plant's second 64pp Lithoman is currently being installed and should be running by late summer.
Algar's role is a new position at the Maldon web printer. Heron production director Ray Lesnik has spent less time at the firm since taking on additional responsibilities as managing director at Wyndeham Impact in Basingstoke.
Sources suggested that Algar could take over from Heron when he retires, but Wyndeham chief executive Paul Utting said the firm's plans were not finalised yet.
Polestar is currently interviewing candidates to replace Algar, whose
release date has yet to be confirmed.
