Platinum aims to boost turnover with 200k Ricoh/KAS spend

Commercial printer Platinum Print has made a £200,000 investment in new machinery to boost its digital turnover and help it with complex mailing work.

A Ricoh Pro C9100 digital press will join a Ricoh Pro C901 at the Harrogate-based firm's premises in September, while a KAS Mailmaster 465HS mail inserter was installed earlier this week.

The Ricoh Pro C9100 has a maximum recommended monthly volume of 1m A4 pages and a print speed of 110ppm. The device supports media up to 400gsm in both simplex and duplex.

Platinum Print managing director Mark Plummer said: “The C901 is now five years old and digital technology gets to the point where things move on so fast. Everything that machine can’t do, this new machine can, hence the reason for this investment.

“We need something that will print on textured papers and heavier papers and with this machine we will now have something that will print larger as well. There’s an opportunity for us to gain work that other people can’t do.”

The firm's new KAS Mailmaster 465HS has replaced one of its old mailing lines.

“It’s got an intelligent feeder so it can feed from a stack, but it’s capable of choosing which bin to feed from as well so it will potentially help us more with some of the transactional work and complex mailings that might come through,” said Plummer.

Last year the business installed a range of machinery including a Komori Lithrone S429 with H-UV drying technology, a Canon Océ Arizona 350GT digital flatbed printer, a Kongsberg XN24 digital cutting table and a Horizon AF-566T4F automated buckle-folder.

The company also operates a five-colour Komori NL528C B2 press, a range of other Ricoh and Konica Minolta digital presses, large-format Mimaki roll-to-roll printers and cutters and a range of mailing equipment and other finishing kit.

Platinum Print employs 29 staff and has a turnover of £3.4m. It provides print, design, cross-media and direct mail services to clients across Yorkshire including local cafe and beverage business Bettys & Taylors Group, Engage Mutual, Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club and Yorkshire Wildlife.
