Pindar seeks kit to automate bindery

Pindar, the Scarborough-based catalogue specialist, is on the hunt for equipment to improve the automation of its new bindery after ordering two Muller Martini PrimaPlus stitchers.

The firm will install the stitchers on 11 and 19 January 2004 and expects them to be operational by the end of that month, according to technical director Dave Williams.

The firm has also ordered an Autobond laminator for the 10,600m2 site, which it took on in the summer as part of a 5m investment plan (PrintWeek, 26 June).

Pindar hopes to order automation equipment by the end of this month and start installation early in the new year. Williams wants to reduce the unpredictability of the labour element of bindery work.

The Muller stitchers, one with eight feeder stations and the other with 10, each have a maximum capacity of 14,000 copies an hour. One will be dedicated to its deal with Avon, which it secured in June (PrintWeek, 19 June), and the other will be used as back-up for the contract.

Its success with Avon has also prompted Pindar to install a fifth unit on its second 48pp MAN Roland Lithoman web allowing it to offer spot colours, fragrances and varnishes (PrintWeek, 25 September).

Pindars Muller Norm binder, which went live two months ago, is exceeding expectations, according to Williams.

The PrimaPlus stitchers will come with Mullers Copy Control and Automatic Signature Image Recognition features.

They will also offer high-speed section log feeding and gathering.

The new site is opposite Pindars existing plant and also houses office space and a seminar theatre.
