When Argos parent GUS sold its home shopping division last year it effectively halved Haithwaites 150m print and paper budget. Id structured the departments so they could run themselves, so life became rather relaxed and I didnt feel I was doing the company credit, he explained.
Haithwaite is likely to remain in the industry, and has irons in the fire regarding the future. After 10 years in print production he said he was potentially interested in crossing over to the supplier side of the business.
Production controller Dominic Pemberton steps up to become head of publications and new media, reporting to Argos marketing director Paul Geddes.
Pemberton said: This shows that succession plans do work! Im very, very pleased, its a great business to work for and its been great working with Steve. We are servicing lots of channels to market, including the internet and digital TV.
Dominic will do a great job and Im very pleased for him, Haithwaite added.
Pemberton has spent 17 years in print production, including spells at Grattan and Kaleidoscope Direct Mail. His 74-strong team includes sample logistics, photography, new media and design and production.
Haithwaite will depart the business at the end of March.
