Overmatter: pop proposal

Ah, the romance of print. We’ve had proposals writ large on billboards, and writ small in newspaper classified ads.

Now, a hat-tip must go to Donnie McGilvray who spotted the romantic potential in Coca-Cola’s recently-expanded Share a Coke campaign.

The revamped soft drink promotion involves thousands of names (first time around it was a mere 150), while a Coca-Cola tie-up with personalised drinks label specialist InterVino provides the opportunity to have one’s own bespoke label printed.

This is, however, restricted to a wordset approved by Coca-Cola, which is obviously wise to the potential for jokers out there to start putting naughty words on its bottles. Profanities are very much not available.

Fortunately for Donnie, he was able to order the necessary wordage to spell out his proposal to the love of his life Eloise. She, perhaps experiencing a foretaste of married life, had been asked to put the milk in the fridge… whereupon she encountered the romantic bottle arrangement “Beautiful Eloise Will You Marry Me”.

Donnie’s pic of his print-based proposal subsequently received more than a million likes on Coca-Cola’s Facebook page.

For any wags out there considering a variant on this theme, we can confirm that “divorce” is not available.
