Orphans gets by with a little help from its press

Publisher Orphans Publishing, which also has a print arm (Orphans Press), was able to both commission and print a celebration of all things Beatles as the 50th anniversary of the seminal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band rolled around.

While this book of Beatles’ infographics, Visualising the Beatles, was printed at the backend of last year, to tie in with the anniversary Orphans printed a limited-edition yellow dust jacket.

What did you produce?

1,500 copies of the 248-page pictorial exploration of Britain’s finest quartet were printed in November of last year, with 500 of the dust jackets printed in early May, to tie in with the late May anniversary of the album. 

Orphans managing director Helen Bowden said: “Because Sgt. Pepper is such a big deal at the moment, everyone is talking about it, so we thought it would be sensible to get on the back of that and really show the cover.”

What did the job entail?

Orphans used its five-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 to print the jackets, which measured 705x290mm when laid flat and 245x290mm when folded. Paper used was 200gsm Essential Silk, which was then laminated with a soft touch matte using a Genesis laminator and applied with spot UV using a Svecia Silkscreen Maskiner. 

The books were printed on the firm’s two-colour Speedmaster SM 74, on 140gsm Horizon Offset paper.

What challenges were overcome?

Bowden said: “It was just about keeping the vibrancy of the colour, that was the case for the whole job. The design for the spot UV is quite detailed, little bits of confetti, which had to be matched well. You see straight away why we’ve changed it and why it’s so eye-catching.”

What was the feedback?

Orphans published the book as well as printing it but the UK stores selling the book were impressed with the finished product.
