The Mailing People has boosted its sustainability credentials with a fresh investment in digital printing, paper wrapping and solar power technology.

The company is a subsidiary of Bishops Printers and like its parent is also located in Portsmouth, on an industrial estate about a mile away from the Bishops base.

The Mailing People has revamped its digital printing setup with two new devices from Konica Minolta: an AccurioPress C12000e colour device, and AccurioPress 6272P mono unit.

The firm said it made a phased changeover from previous supplier Xerox, “prompted by the phasing out of key machines in the Nuvera range”.

Managing director Kristian Harrington said the company spent more than six months assessing the market, with key requirements being speed, quality and efficient production in both mono and colour.

“The level of service and partnership was the final deciding factor in our move to Konica Minolta,” he said.

“They have a really good understanding of our challenges and printing requirements both now and in the future.”

Jon Hiscock, head of Production and Industrial Print at Konica Minolta Business Solutions UK commented: “By reducing energy consumption and waste, both the AccurioPress 6272P and AccurioPress C12000e are designed with sustainability firmly in mind.”

He highlighted the low fusing temperature of KM’s Simitri toner, along with its deinkability.

Both of the new digital presses have EPEAT Gold certification, an ecolabel for electronics and technology products that is operated by the Global Electronics Council.

Earlier this year The Mailing People also installed a new solar array involving nearly 100 panels, fitted by The Logical Group.

Harrington said that the live dashboard showing tracking the array’s performance “has become my new obsession!”

The system can potentially generate up to 80% of the energy required by the factory.

Dave Pollinger, director of The Logical Group commented: “We were delighted to be asked by Kristian and his team to look at how we could not only reduce the site’s energy consumption, but also the carbon emissions associated with that energy use.

“After reviewing the site’s activities, it was agreed solar was the best option to achieve this. With quick paybacks and instant carbon reduction, the solution met all of Kristian’s requirements.

“We’re delighted everyone at The Mailing People is pleased with the solution – and we completely understand the obsession with the live dashboard!”

The latest investment round has been completed with a new Sitma W1150 10 paper wrap line, which can wrap up to five items and handles packs from A5 to A4 size, and up to 25mm thick.

“Our customers want more sustainable solutions without compromising on quality or cost-effectiveness,” Harrington added. “This machine means we can say yes to that more often, and back it up with performance.”

The Mailing People employs 25 and has turnover of £6.2m. The firm typically mails out more than 10m items a year.

Bishops Printers had sales of £27.75m in the year to 31 January.
