Openshaw has begun rolling out its new online ordering facility, Openshaw Gold.
So far, some 200 customers are set up to use the online service with 50 actively trading.
The system generates a bespoke buying list based on the customers' purchases over the past six to 12 months. It also features monthly special offers and health and safety product data sheets.
"This is a true e-commerce system - customer order generates a picking note at the relevant depot," explained group chief executive David Coltart.
"We have been rigorous in our systems, because if the system is not secure then the customer ceases to get a service."
The roll-out of the online operation is the culmination of an intensive four-month development programme and a 650,000 investment in IT and telecommunications systems. "We have 70,000 item codes and just transacting that is a massive task," Coltart added.
Customer satisfaction manager Carine Hollister described customer feedback as "excellent".
"It's easy to use - it can be set up as customers like it. For example, products can be viewed by item number or product name," she said.
