New year predictions: Craig Mather, Simply Cartons

Craig Mather, the chief executive of Nottingham-based Simply Cartons and Simply Luxe, is upbeat about the prospects for packaging and urges the industry to pull together in 2017.

What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?
Family Time!!!!!

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2016 will be remembered for
Not technology this year but definitely business in 2016, it has been a year of real change in every aspect

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2017 and why?
Opportunity has always been there, and always will be there. It’s just a case of looking from outside the box back in!

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2017 and why?
Politicians and currency

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2017?
Start pulling together instead of pulling it apart

What was your biggest disappointment in 2016?
Don't really do disappointment, but I was sad to see a couple of very loyal staff (who have been with me since the beginning) retire for various reasons

What was your highlight of 2016?
Getting a new lease of life for packaging and realising that once in print always in print

What are your hopes for 2017?
To expect the unexpected, believe the unbelievable and we may achieve the unachievable

What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Be careful of the toes you tread on today because they may be connected to the ass you've got to kiss tomorrow!

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2016?
I’m only human, or is it that I’m getting old…

What if anything will you do differently in 2017?
Nothing, not really something that I’m capable of (which everyone who knows me knows), I have always worked on the motto ‘be the best you can be’

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
Almost every cracker joke drives me mad, but here goes…
I’ve just been offered eight legs of venison for £40.
Is that two deer?

What was the best Christmas present you ever received?
This sounds really sad but I don't like getting presents at Christmas, I genuinely much prefer to give presents. So for me the best present would be seeing people’s faces when they receive their Christmas gifts

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
Nope, never have if honest. Just onwards, forwards and only do what makes you happy!
