Ink and laser manufacturer The Needham Group has celebrated its 60th year in business.

Founded in 1962 by Roger Needham, the Whitchurch-based business is now helmed by his son, chairman David Needham, and managing director Aled Ellis.

Made up of three subsidiaries – ink manufacturer and coding printer supplier Needham Ink Tech, industrial laser systems manufacturer Needham Laser Tech, and marking equipment and consumables supplier Needham Technologies IRE – the group has doubled in size over the past four years and now employs 65.

In 2018, the group acquired DeBe Lasers, adding R&D expertise to the business, and resulting in the launch of Needham Laser Technologies in 2019, which manufactures laser marking machines for the UK market.

Ellis said: “Since 1962, we have seen a significant transformation to the business landscape, but our family-owned business remains true to its heritage within the heart of rural Shropshire.

“Our success is down to our commitment to build long-term and prosperous relationships with our customers and partners, together with a dedication to our employees and our community."

The family-owned business kicked off its 61st year by pushing out its new ‘Create’ range of laser marking machines.

Aimed at retailers, the Create range is designed to let shops engrave customers’ purchases at the point of purchase.

Ellis said: “Over the last few years, there has been considerable market growth in personalised products, so much so that we have developed a range of laser systems specially designed to offer bespoke engraving on an array of products, including knives, gold and silver jewellery, and my personal favourite, golf clubs.”

Commercial director Hannah Ellis added: “As customers seek out personalised items and gifts, businesses are realising the need for a convenient, sustainable way to offer next-level customer experience services.

“Laser engraving provides them with the perfect solution, allowing them to add value to their products with personalisation while minimising their carbon footprint.”

Aled Ellis added that the group hoped to grow its share of the industrial identification market and international markets.
