Plans for new kraft paper machine

Mondi completes $5m Canadian acquisition

King: "This enables us to simplify our portfolio"
King: looking forward to helping secure the mill’s future

Packaging and paper manufacturer Mondi has completed the acquisition of Hinton Pulp mill in Alberta, Canada, from West Fraser Timber for a total consideration of $5m USD (£3.98m).

The mill has the capacity to produce around 250,000 tonnes of pulp per annum and will provide Mondi with access to “local, high-quality fibre from a well-established wood basket” as part of a long-term partnership with West Fraser.

Last year, Mondi said it planned to invest €400m (£342m) into the plant, primarily for a new 200,000 tonne kraft paper machine, due to come online in late 2027. The company said this would integrate its paper bag operations in the Americas and support future growth.

The intended investment will improve productivity and sustainability performance at the mill, Mondi added.

Group CEO Andrew King said: “We are delighted to welcome our new colleagues from Hinton Pulp mill to Mondi and look forward to working together to secure the mill’s future and support Mondi’s growth in North America with our portfolio of sustainable packaging.”
