Killer App: Signtek races against clock

Eastbourne-based printer Signtek worked to a 36-hour deadline to wrap a Lotus Evora in time to get to the qualification session for the British GT at the world-famous Nrburgring in Germany.

What did the job entail?

Lotus Sport called Signtek’s team at 5.15pm on Wednesday to book its Lotus Evora racecar in to be stripped, cleaned and re-wrapped with Lotus’ new branding by 6am on Friday morning in time for delivery to the Nürburgring. Signtek had to rely on speedy delivery of the vinyl from Robert Horne Paper in Leicester in order to meet the challenging deadline put forward by Lotus.

How was it produced?
Signtek’s full team worked around the clock to remove the previous wrap using "heat guns and a lot of patience", according to managing director Chris Manlow.

Robert Horne Paper delivered the 1,500mm-wide, 30m roll of black Orafol vinyl film by 7am on Thursday morning, which was used to hand-wrap the base layer on the vehicle.

The gold detailing was cut out of Orafol vinyl using a Roland Soljet XC 540 that was driven by CAD based on designs created in Illustrator.

What challenges were overcome?
Manlow said that the deadline was the biggest challenge as there was "no give" – the car had to make it to the Nürburgring to compete in the British GT qualification session. He was tasked with getting all the supplies in on time and making sure the team were all on track.

What was the feedback?
A Lotus Sport UK spokesperson said: "We have received excellent service carried out on this last-minute booking. All the other work that they have undertaken for us has been superb. The guys at SignTek are professional, understanding and very helpful, with work being carried out to the highest standard."
