Killer app: Pureprint hits steely target

Pureprint Group worked with communication agency Black Sun to print the annual report for international steel firm Novolipetsk Steel on an uncoated stock from Antalis McNaughton's new Olin range.

How was the job produced? Once Black Sun had selected the Olin Smooth Absolute White stock, Pureprint produced a proof on its six-colour Heidelberg XL 105 press to test paper performance. The job was printed in five colours, CMYK plus a Pantone grey that was used in the duotones. The report was printed, folded and bound inside 46 hours, which Pureprint said was a "massive achievement" given the typically slow drying times of uncoated papers.

What challenges were overcome? According to Ian Murdock, sales and marketing director at Pureprint, the biggest challenge was completing the job under strict deadlines. "The report was required for an AGM in Russia so we had a particularly challenging deadline," he said.

An additional challenge was to achieve the depth of colour, vibrant illustrations and contrasting imagery contained within the report on the new stock. This was achieved by underpinning the black with the cyan, magenta and yellow to produce a richer colour. "By underpinning with the other three colours, you get less absorption of the black and more sitting on the surface of the paper, giving you what we call a richer black," said Murdock.

What was the feedback? Neil Jack, designer at Black Sun, was pleased with the result and said: "The stock has a high-quality surface and great opacity, which allowed us to put down a deep rich black and still not have an issue with show-through. You get a vibrant result, equal to a coated sheet, while benefiting from an uncoated paper’s tactile nature."
