Killer app: P4CK serves up stout carrier

Packaging designer P4CK unveiled its new drinks carrier, the CarryBar, manufactured by Benson Group, to the 90,000-strong audience on 17 November at the QBE International England versus Australia rugby match.

What did the job entail?

Benson Group produced P4CK’s design for the cardboard drinks carrier, which holds four pint glasses and is aimed at festival goers and audiences at sporting events. Around 100,000 carriers were produced for the match, with branding split between Guinness and Greene King IPA.

How was it produced?
The boxes were printed on a Heidelberg XL 105 in four colours plus a gloss varnish on 420micron Kraft Frovi Light board. A Bobst Expertcut 106 XP was used to cut and crease the flatpack boxes ready for assembly and they were glued on a Bobst Alpina 110.

What challenges were overcome?
The round holes to carry drinks had teeth-like cut-outs to keep drinks in place, but Benson had to ensure that they did not get caught or stuck during the gluing process. Also, the central seam had to be glued correctly to give the CarryBar the rigidity needed to hold the weight of four pints.

What was the feedback?
P4CK director Luke Booth said: "It has been a pleasure to have worked with Benson Group on this latest project. The team there are very helpful and have worked closely with us on the manufacturing side of the CarryBar product. The turnaround time was exceptional, and the quality of the product has been remarked on by our customers."

The company is now in talks with the RFU with respect to producing another order for 2013’s Six Nations tournament.
